In the late evening and early morning of June 20/21, millions of Brazilians began receiving “extreme alerts” (alerta extremo) from their Civil Defense (Defesa Civil) which is run by the National System of Civil Protection and Disaster that integrates federal, state, and municipal agencies to respond to natural disasters. The messages varied and many were cryptic phrases using the word “misantropi”, which translates as misanthropy - hatred for humanity.
