After their prime suspect Dr. Grimesby Roylott makes a surprising (and threatening) visit to Baker Street, Holmes and Watson are off to Stoke Moran to examine the scene of the crime. Holmes notes some peculiarities - a bell-pull without a bell, a ventilator without ventilation - and comes to the conclusion that he and Watson should stay in Miss Helen Stoner's room tonight, and she should sleep elsewhere for her own safety.
