Nora goes back through eleven years of journals looking for patterns she missed. The gaps cluster in October. They began, she realises now, the autumn after Deborah died. She calls Martin Hale, expecting a stranger, and finds a man who knows her well — who references three months of conversations she has no memory of, an investigation she has apparently been conducting during her gaps.
