National Debt Surpasses $40 Trillion
The national debt surpassed a record $40 trillion dollars on Wednesday, a staggering milestone as defense costs, social programs like Social Security and Medicare and interest on the burgeoning deficit make up an enormous share of federal spending. Correspondent Rich Johnson reports it took just five months for the US national debt to increase by another one trillion dollars, and double under the last two presidents.
