⭐ Catholic Review — 4/5 A richly developed social novel about family duty, parental authority, vocation, love, responsibility, forgiveness, and the consequences of personal choices. Edwin's struggle to escape his father's control while assuming family responsibilities gives the novel considerable moral depth. However, the story also involves an irregular marriage, illegitimacy, deception, and complicated romantic relationships, so it is not especially wholesome by Catholic standards. Still, its serious treatment of human weakness and responsibility makes it worthwhile for mature readers.
