Lughnasadh is one of the eight witch’s holidays—or sabbats—on the Wheel of the Year. It’s the first of the three harvest festivals, celebrated around August 1st in the Northern Hemisphere. Long ago, our ancestors were out in the fields cutting wheat, barley, oats, and rye—the grains that would see them through the long, dark winter. They baked the very first loaf of bread as a sacred act, then offered a portion back to the land and the spirits in deep gratitude.
