May 11th: A Day of Devastation in Texas History - Three catastrophic tornadoes struck Texas on May 11th in 1953, 1970, and 1977, causing massive destruction and loss of life in Waco, San Angelo, and Lubbock. The 1953 Waco tornado, with winds up to 260 mph, was the deadliest, killing 114 and injuring 600. The 1970 San Angelo tornado killed 13 and injured 159. The 1977 Lubbock tornado took 26 lives and devastated neighborhoods and the business district. These disasters led to the creation of a nationwide radar network for earlier severe weather alerts, saving countless lives.
